Conveying their A-bomb Experience
More than half a century after the atomic bombing, the survivors, called hibakusha in Japanese, are becoming quite elderly. Their average age as of March 31, 2001, is over 70 years. As many have passed away, their numbers are dwindling.
Some hibakusha are confined to hospitals due to aftereffects, and many live in fear, wondering when the radiation might strike.
